Street Views from West Pune
Suburbs in west Pune have their own culture, an interesting mix of peaceful, urban, well-developed and still not extremely cosmopolitan neighbourhoods. Arterial roads like Jangali Maharaj Road, Fergusson College Road, Karve Road, Senapati Bapat Road, Ganeshkhind Road and Baner Road are all part of the suburbs in West Pune. Karve road and its surroundings developed as a middle class area with people in central Pune migrating, and also earned the title of fastest growing Asian suburb in 1990s. On the other side of Deccan gymkhana stood Fergusson College, Agricultural College and the University of Pune. Model colony, Prabhat road, Senapati Bapat road are green and popular residential as well as commercial neighbourhoods.
University of Pune has a lovely green campus and a sprawling Raj Bhavan, the governor’s palatial quarters nearby. Aundh, located around 2 kilometres from here, is one of the most upmarket localities in Pune. It is a self-contained, multi-ethnic area that has grown over the years into a plush neighbourhood with large population of non-Maharashtrian fraternity. Baner, starting as an annexe to Aundh developed with an astonishing pace over last few years. Its proximity to IT Park at Hinjewadi made it a popular neighbourhood with migrants as well as local IT professionals.
