A major turning point in the city’s development came in 1818, when the Peshwas’ fate was scaled at the Battle of Khadki. At the Battle of Khadki, the Peshwa’s armies were defeated, and the British flag hoisted on the Shaniwar Wada under a royal salute, bringing to an end Pune’s days of glory.
Kirkee Cantonment is one of the oldest Cantonments in India. Kirkee Cantonment has a varied mix of important units and establishments, like, BEG and Centre, CAFVD, 512 Army Base Workshop, College of Military Engineering, an Ammunition Factory and a High Explosives Factory.
Pune also has an Air Force base station, at Lohegaon. Pune’s airport is located here, which is a partly-civilian airport. Major development has taken place around airport. Yerwada, next to Lohegaon has been the location of Pune’s central jail as well as a major mental hospital. This area, along with Viman Nagar, Vishrantwadi has developed at an astounding pace in last decade.
